Window cleaning robots for the RIVM Building

Situated along the A27 motorway, the new accommodation complex for the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) stands out with its striking glass façade. The building, approximately 80 metres tall and 60 metres wide, was designed with sustainability as a core principle and is BREEAM-certified. In addition to office spaces, it also houses laboratories. The architectural design is by Claus van Wageningen.

What makes this project unique is its method of delivery: a public-private partnership (PPP), in which the construction consortium MEET Strukton is responsible for the design, construction, financing, maintenance, and operation of the building for a period of 25 years.

Cleaning robot as a key to sustainable operation

In this DBFMO contract (Design, Build, Finance, Maintain, Operate), a long-term vision is essential. Since the contractor is also responsible for maintenance over many years, choices made at the outset are focused on minimizing operational costs. The selection of Kite Robotics’ façade washing robot fits seamlessly within this approach.

By deploying two tailor-made robots, the consortium saves over 80% on labor, energy, and water costs. One robot is designated for the atrium roof of the tower, while the other handles façade cleaning for both the high-rise and low-rise sections of the building.

Design by Van Wageningen Architecten

Felix Claus Dick van Wageningen Architecten is responsible for the design of the new accommodation complex for RIVM (and CBG) at the Uithof in Utrecht. The transparent, sustainable building, with approximately 70,000 m² of floor space and 18 storeys, was realized within the PPP/DBFMO model.

Robot

Safe solution in a busy environment

The robots are not only efficient, but also sustainable and safe. Thanks to smart technology and specially developed anchor points, they can easily access façades with deep recesses of 22 cm and roofs with parapets up to 2.5 metres high.

Given the location directly next to the A27 motorway, a railway line, and several nearby construction projects, frequent and effective cleaning is essential. With this smart technology, Kite Robotics contributes to both the aesthetic upkeep and the sustainable, cost-efficient operation of this innovative government building.
